Editorial: Let BPD keep ShotSpotter tech – it saves lives

May 15, 2024

The Boston Herald published an op-ed advocating for the continued use of ShotSpotter technology in Boston. The article argues that ShotSpotter saves lives by ensuring a rapid police response to gunfire, which often goes unreported. Emphasizing that public safety should be the top priority, especially in high-crime neighborhoods, the authors state, “Families, and children especially, deserve an environment in which they can grow and thrive. They shouldn’t have to open the door to a police officer delivering the news that a loved one was shot and bled out on the sidewalk because no one called the police.” In light of these facts, the op-ed urges Boston city leaders to renew the ShotSpotter contract to help combat gun violence effectively.
