One notable instance involved ShotSpotter alerting the LVMPD to nine rounds fired in Downtown Area Command. Officers reached the location and found an injured victim before any 9-1-1 calls were placed. This rapid response ensured critical medical care and led to the swift apprehension of the suspect. In another case, ShotSpotter detected 12 rounds fired at an apartment complex in Northeast Area Command. The alert enabled officers to prevent the escalation of a domestic violence situation and ensure the victim’s safety.
In 2023, the technology helped recover 4,019 key pieces of shooting evidence and 83 firearms. In Northwest Area Command, an alert about multiple rounds fired led to the recovery of over 74 key pieces of evidence from three different weapons. This evidence supported a gang-related investigation and the arrest of two suspects. Similarly, an alert to 37 rounds fired in Downtown Area Command led to the collection of over 100 key pieces of evidence, aiding in the apprehension of three suspects for a range of charges.
In Northeast Area Command, ShotSpotter detected automatic gunfire, prompting officers to track a suspicious vehicle in the area using public safety cameras. This combined intelligence led to the driver’s arrest on firearm-related charges and the recovery of a fully automatic 9mm handgun. In another instance, a ShotSpotter alert in Bolden Area Command provided a precise location for gunfire visible to a near public safety camera. This integration led to the identification and arrest of two individuals in possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number, getting an illegal weapon off the street and ensuring community safety.
